Accreditation information for WASC, UC & NCAA

Dear parents,

We understand this is a difficult time for everyone and a purely online summer school is not what we were expecting. However, we are excited about how we have organized Hillside’s summer school this year to allow for continued quality education. We are very fortunate to have five years experience teaching UC approved online courses. All of our teachers are returning Hillside summer school teachers and are dedicated to helping in an intimate and flexible setting. Our teachers are excited and confident about providing a meaningful summer school experience this year. We wish we could see them face to face, however since we cannot, we want to model resilient behavior with our students to never stop learning.

There were many factors determining the virtual meeting requirements and times. We considered the originally scheduled time of classes, the attention span of students during a meeting, the amount of screen-time students are exposed to, the subject matter and the required time for teaching.

We ask students to use an email account that is not associated with their home school for our online courses as we have had issues with their ability to access our platforms. Gmail and i cloud emails seem to work very well. You will be notified when you can pick up textbooks during the week of June 8-12. Please note that the prior maximum of three absences policy will not be in effect. Student participation in virtual sessions will be required and any meetings missed will result in affecting participation points in the course grade. Science courses will be taught with online/virtual sessions and are qualified as lab sciences. The lab fee will be collected and used toward necessary subscriptions to meet these requirements.

Unlike the online school that students are experiencing now, students, families and teachers are going into summer school with a plan and consistent schedule. We hope this will ease your concerns. If you have any questions or concerns we welcome you to reach out to us.

Thank you for choosing Hillside for summer school!

Sincerely,

Cyndi Hatcher

Director

The Hillside School and Learning Center utilizes four proven scholastic techniques to reach and empower students to achieve beyond their challenges. Small class sizes, one-to-one teaching, positive reinforcement and psychological services work together to help and motivate students who have disengaged from learning–whether due to psychological or educational factors. Some students may be dealing with ADD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, processing disorders or known as twice-exceptional students. Many students have experienced special education in their school and the needs were not fully met. Some students have attended non-traditional settings such as homeschooling or independent study and are ready for a change.

The mission of The Hillside School and Learning Center is to provide an intimate environment in which students are guided by a committed faculty and staff to obtain the academic knowledge, the life skills, and the self-confidence to pursue a post-high school education, vocational education or meaningful employment to be productive and successful citizens.
