Hillside Mission

The mission of The Hillside School and Learning Center is to provide a safe and supportive environment in which students are guided by the committed faculty and staff to obtain the academic knowledge, life skills, and self-confidence to pursue a college education, vocational education or meaningful employment in order to be productive and successful citizens

How do we do what we do?

The Hillside School and Learning Center utilizes four proven scholastic techniques to reach and empower its students.

Our small class sizes, one-to-one teaching techniques, positive reinforcement and psychological services work together to reach students who have disengaged from learning–whether due to psychological, motivational or behavioral factors.

Small class Sizes

The proof of our success is the success of our students. Many have attended some of the country’s finest colleges. Others have enjoyed success at a wide range of business endeavors. For those students who attend The Hillside School or one of its innovative programs on an interim basis, they return to their classrooms better organized, more confident, and with greatly enhanced skills that help them excel.

Positive Reinforcement

Sometimes, parents and students reach The Hillside School after several attempts at finding the right educational path. Their frustration is tangible–and can lead to a negative attitude towards the school experience in general and toward the student’s self-esteem in particular. At The Hillside School, we begin each student’s journey by tapping into their potential–so that each successive experience helps to build their self-esteem.

One to One Teaching

While some students at The Hillside School require a state-approved IEP (Individual Educational Plan), all students at The Hillside School receive it’s equivalent.  Because classes are small and teachers are adept in focusing on the needs of the individual, all our students experience a personalized education. Each student moves at a pace appropriate for them and receives the level of direction and guidance necessary to address their learning issues.

One to One Counseling

Carol Maskin, MFT/psychotherapist plays an important role in students’ social and emotional well being and is a critical resource. We believe in partnering with the student’s outside therapist if there is one. A team approach is key to finding success.

Alumni Spotlight

Mel Schroeder - Class of 2016

Mel is now an Associate at Lenox Advisors responsible for working with both corporate and high net worth individual clients of the firm. Prior to joining Lenox, he attended Loyola Marymount University where he received a degree in Political Science. Mel shared with us recently, “Hillside provided a safe environment where I was able to really learn and where I felt safe to admit I did not understand something and ask for help. I still to this day have never had such connections with my teachers as I did at Hillside. The school had a sense of community that encourages students to reach their highest potential and I definitely do not think I would be where I am today without the support of Hillside School.”

Emma Baker - Class of 2019

Emma is currently studying linguistics at The University of Arizona. She impressed all of her teachers at Hillside with her love and talent of learning languages which included English, Spanish, French, Armenian and American Sign Language. Emma shared, “Hillside provided me with a stable base from which to grow emotionally and academically.” Emma also shared recently, “My favorite part of Hillside was how small it was. Everyone knew everyone else and that made for a remarkably special high school experience.” It’s also remarkable to know that Emma’s small supportive environment at Hillside prepared her for her current successes at a university where the undergraduate student population is well over 35,000 students.
